We’ve all been there. You’re trying to get to sleep but you can’t stop tossing and turning, or you nod off but wake up frequently during the night.  We’ve got some good ideas to help optimize your sleeping environment and stop counting sheep. Here are some things to consider:

Check Your Humidity. Maintaining proper humidity year-round is important to your home comfort. If your bedroom is too dry in the colder months, consider Woman stretching in bed after waking up sunlight in morning NJR Home Servicesinstalling a whole-house humidifier. If it’s too damp in the warmer months, run your AC system to help lower the humidity.

Address Heating System Noises. If your system is older or experiencing frequent breakdowns, you may notice unusual sounds coming from your heating system. These noises may indicate a problem, so be sure to not ignore them.

Check Your Thermostat. When your body prepares for sleep, your core temperature drops in order to help you relax. A cooler bedroom can help enhance sleep quality. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the ideal sleeping temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees.* If you have a smart or programmable thermostat, set your bedtime temperature accordingly.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Poor indoor air quality can affect your sleep. Be sure to change the filters in your furnace monthly, vacuum and dust your bedroom regularly and think about having your ducts cleaned, especially if it’s been several years since they were last serviced.
