Heating SystemHome HeatingHVACOctober 3, 2017by NJRHS ADMINFour Scary Heating System Noises You Shouldn’t Ignore

October is generally the time of year you turn on your heat for the first time since winter ended. Be aware of any unusual sounds coming from your heating system. Rest assured, it’s not a ghost – but your furnace may be trying to tell you something is wrong. Here are some things to listen for:

  • Deep Rumblings or a Loud Boom. Rumbling sounds can indicate problems with your blower motor, burners, flame sensor or pilot light. A loud boom can indicate a delayed ignition problem. If you have a boiler, listen for hissing, thumping or banging sounds. They are all a sign something may be wrong.
  • Clicking Noises. A clicking noise is normal when your furnace is first turning on. If your furnace starts to click, the blower turns on, and then back off again, you could have a problem with your flame sensor.
  • Rattling and Scraping Metal. This can indicate an issue with your blower motor or wheel. If you hear this, turn your furnace off immediately and call a professional.
  • New Noises. If you start to hear a noise you never heard before when you have the heat on, you should have it checked by a professional.

Ignoring unusual noises could lead to serious damage to your heating system that could have been easily prevented. This heating season, be alert to see if your furnace is trying to tell you something. NJR Home Services is here to help keep you comfortable all year long.
