Energy EfficiencySeptember 5, 2017by NJRHS ADMINSimple Steps to Maximize Your Homes’ Energy Efficiency

There are many easy and inexpensive actions you can take to help save energy and money all year long. Replacing your air filter on a regular basis should be at the top of your to-do list. A fresh filter helps keep the coil and heat exchanger clean, which increases energy efficiency, minimizes the risk of breakdowns and extends the life of your HVAC system. Here are some additional ways to save:

  • Upgrade your thermostat. If you’re still using an older thermostat, consider replacing it with a smarter option like The Nest Learning ThermostatTMHands changing air filter NJR Home Services, which programs itself and automatically helps save energy when you’re away.
  • Limit use of exhaust fans. Remember to turn off the kitchen, bath and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes of use to save energy.
  • Invest in a humidifier. Humid air feels warmer and has the ability to hold heat for longer. With a humidifier, you won’t have to rely as much on your heating system once the cooler temps roll around.
  • Make sure the caulking around your windows and doors is intact. A well-insulated home helps keep out the cold and keep in the heat.
  • Unplug electronics when you’re away. Many household devices that are plugged in may still use energy even if they are turned off. Before you leave for vacation or a weekend getaway, be sure to unplug appliances and electronics.
  • Repair leaky faucets, showerheads and pipes. A leak of one drip per second can waste approximately 1,661 gallons of water per year*.
