Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are much more than an inconvenience. Each winter on average, a quarter-million families experience the nightmare of water pipes that freeze and burst, ruining their homes and disrupting their lives.

A small crack in a pipe can leak up to 250 gallons of water a day, wrecking floors, furniture and keepsakes. Both plastic (PVC) and copper pipes can burst.

By taking a few simple precautions, you can save yourself the mess, money and aggravation frozen pipes cause.

  • Disconnect garden hoses and use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.
  • Insulate pipes in crawl spaces and attic.
  • Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located.
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • When it is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from a faucet on an outside wall.
  • If you're away during cold weather, it's important to leave the heat on in your house. Set the thermostat to a temperature no lower than 50 degrees.

If the house is vacant, you can install a FreezeAlarm device that will call three telephone numbers if the temperature goes below a certain level in your home. Visit the Indoor Products section on our Web site for more information on Freeze Alarms.
