Checklist for Your Heating and Air Conditioning

  • Check to see that the ouput and return registers are open and free from obstacles like furniture.
  • Make sure the emergency switch is in the on position.
  • Check to see if any of the circuit breakers off or tripped.
  • Make sure the doors to the filter or other parts of the heating/blower assembly system are fully closed.
  • Hot water heating systems do not have or need filters.
  • During the winter, be certain that the thermostat is set to the heating mode and in the summer check to see that it has been set to the cooling mode.
  • A leaking hot water or steam boiler should be repaired right away.
  • Never pile any flammables around your heating unit.
  • Soot is a sign of serious problems. You should schedule a cleaning.

All natural gas appliances need an adequate supply of air for proper combustion. Make sure that there is proper exhaustion and that the flue is straight and attached. Harmful gases like carbon monoxide can form from lack of proper ventilation.

If it is very hot outside, be patient. You may be encountering a practical limit of cooling to only about 20 degrees below the outside air temperature. Remember if it is 95 degrees outside, the house may only be able to be cooled to 75 degrees. This is a limitation of the air conditioning unit and not necessarily a problem.
